TRIED IT! PRODUCT REVIEWS
Matt Yoo, Groomers’ Best Friend, WA, purchased 20 sticks, which with his volume, will last him for 18 months. He found, similar to Ward Collins conclusion, in Ridgecrest, CA, that the application with a wood block will rub grit it, but not spread it well. Ward Collins in CA agrees about the wood block applicator, and said it takes practice
to apply it uniformly across the plate. He likes to spray 70% alcohol to then quickly pass a comb across before evaporation to capture any high spots in the grit application. He also tried several methods to spread it. A neoprene PAD worked well; while a wood block wasn’t as effective. A sponge applicator might absorb the product, creating waste. Matt also uses the grit applicator sold by Sharp Edges. He applies it on a 16” lapping plate made by The Shop, with the scraped finish, installed on the newer Nebraska Blades CS 201-2017. He’s mobile, and finds the Clip-Lap grit stick less messy than using lard oil and loose 200 grit. “This is waxy, and cleaner,” Matt said. It’s a great alternative, Ward said: “No one likes the dust of grit flying around,” Ward said, while this editor sang on cue, “Dust in the Wind…”
Jason Sturm of The Edge Pro, IA, is not carrying it yet, but may. He’s waiting to hear from the industry. “Once the application is mastered and the process repeatable with efficient results, new products can be great. I’ve found if I’m not careful, and the aluminium is not uniformly covered with a barrier between it and the steel blades, you’ll wear your plate out faster no matter what you are using. One bare damaged spot on a plate will spread and effect performance.”
